The book The Sound of Waves is the story of Shinji, and his journey to adulthood. During his coming-of-age, Shinji falls in love with the wealthy ship owner Terukichi Miyata's daughter, Hatsue , once she returns to the island. Hatsue was raised as a pearl diver on another island . After Shinji and Hatsue have fallen in love, Chiyoko, the daughter of the island lighthouse keeper, is disappointed when she returns from the university to find that Shinji has fallen in love with someone else. Chiyoko takes advantage of the jealous gossiper of the village, Yasuo Kawamoto, and they spread evil rumors of Shinji stealing Hatsue's virginity. After the rumors spread thoughout the village, Shinji and Hatsue are banned from seeing one another, they still continue to communicate through friends and secret letters. Tension between Shinji and Hatsue only increases when Shinji's mother tries to meet with Terukichi, who still refuses Shinji to see his daughter.
